The album title speaks for itself, as Nicola and Jarguna proudly present their second project. The essence of this album resonates with its title, aiming to communicate the very essence of resistance, especially in a time marked by increasing oppression and a chaotic blend of truths.
The album's titles represent various places or groups of people who have erected walls against invasions, resisting the arrival of other peoples who have pillaged, massacred, or subjected entire populations to chains. These acts have been perpetrated in the name of religion, wealth, or the intertwining of both with power.
Hence, the core message Jarguna and Nicola aim to convey unwavering tenacity to believe in one's values and fight for them. Throughout the sound exploration process, they maintained close contact, benefiting from their proximity as they shared instruments. By combining Marco’s modulation skills with Nicola's expertise, they have generated intense and evocative textures that transcend preconceived notions or limitations.
‘’ We feel honoured to be a part of the esteemed label Canaanite Records. Baal immediately showed interest in our musical works. We, too, appreciated Baal's musical style and our desire was to blend our own unique sounds within that genre. ‘’
While Jarguna holds a deep admiration for tribal percussion and field recordings, Nicola's inclination leans towards pure synthesis. However, this divergence adds character to their work, blending different styles into tracks filled with captivating sonorities.
Even the titles themselves possess their own distinctive character. For instance, we begin with the voice of an elderly Vietnamese woman who sings to her loved ones lost in the war.
In the second track, we journey to Central America, where El Caracol stood as a fortified Mayan settlement, fiercely resisting the Spanish invaders.
Uluru-Kata, on the other hand, pays homage to the revered Australian Aboriginal sacred mountain. The indigenous people have persistently fought to prevent tourists and climbers from violating the sanctity of this natural structure.
While Death Spiral does not share a specific reference, it symbolizes the relentless cycle of ants turning upon themselves until exhaustion claims their lives. This perplexing behaviour, still not fully understood, occurs when the leader emitting a pheromone loses its orientation, driving the entire colony into madness. It serves as a metaphor for blindly following orders without critical thinking.
The Dakota Access Pipeline, spanning approximately 1200 km across Native American lands in the United States, becomes the subject of protest in our next track. Native Americans have raised their voices in numerous demonstrations against this destructive assault on the Earth.
The final piece, Vargan's Jakuti, centres around the Vargan instrument, a small mouth harp found in various populations across the Mediterranean and extreme Asia. The Jakuti people, an ethnic group of Siberian origin, resisted the gradual encroachment of resource-seeking Russians. This track maintains a persistent and percussive sound throughout, at times evoking the essence of this unique idiophone.
Within each of us courses the blood of an undefeated warrior.
